Essential body oils are one of the most popular trends and people assume they are safe for all body types because they are natural. It is true that they are, for the most part, natural and safe for all skin types. However, that does not mean that you do not have to exercise a certain amount of caution when using essential body oils as part of your regular skin care routine.
Dilute Essential Body Oils with Carrier Oil
It is important to remember that, although they are natural products, essential body oils can often be very strong. Someone with sensitive skin or with certain allergies may experience irritation or even minor burns if they use a full power oil directly on their skin. For this reason, it is very important to dilute your essential oils with carrier oils such as olive or avocado oil before putting them on your skin. This will not make them less effective, but it will make them safer.
Do a Patch Test
Even after you’ve diluted your essential oils, it is important to take precautions to make sure your skin is not going to have a reaction to them. You can do this by performing a simple patch test. Put a small amount of the diluted oil on a small section of your skin and wait for 24 hours. If no reactions occur, you should be fine using the oil on a larger portion of your body. If a rash or any inflammation occurs, however, you should, unfortunately, stop using that particular oil and start looking for a new skin care solution.
Check for Conflicting Ingredients
While some oils may be perfectly fine alone on your skin, there is a chance that they can react adversely with the ingredients in your other skin care products. Although this is rare, it can lead to very uncomfortable complications. Make sure you research any ingredients that may not work well with the essential oil of your choice. If there are any conflicting ingredients that you know you use in your skin care routine, you may just need to adjust when and how you use each product to avoid any irritation to your skin.
