Essential bath oils are among the most popular ways to use essential oils for your skin care needs. This is largely because not only do they treat various skin care issues but using them in the bathtub also feels relaxing and luxurious in a way that lotions and serums do not. If you plan to use essential bath oils for your skin care needs, follow these tips to make sure you are using them correctly.
Essential Bath Oils and Water
We all know oil and water don’t mix but some of us tend to forget this when it comes time for a relaxing bath. If you pour essential oils straight into your bath, they will rest on top of the water and touch your skin undiluted. This could lead to irritation, especially in more sensitive areas of the body. To be on the safe side, use essential oil products that are specifically designed for use in the bathtub. They will mix properly with the water and give your skin the intended result.
Avoid Extreme Heat
Some folks are under the impression their bathwater needs to be warmer than usual in order to activate the essential oils. This is simply not the case and, in fact, taking a bath that is too hot can do a great deal of damage to your skin. In addition to minor burns and irritations, excessively hot water will suck the moisture out of your skin. This will undo any progress that may have been made from essential bath oils that are designed to hydrate your skin. Lukewarm water is best in order to get the full benefit of your bath oils.
After Bath Care
It is also important to apply moisturizer immediately after your bath, even if you have used bath oils that moisturize your skin. When the water begins to evaporate off your skin, it can cause excessive dryness. You can avoid this by applying moisturizer immediately upon exiting the bath. As a bonus, your moisturizer will lock in the hydration from the water, giving you even softer skin that you would have had from the bath oils alone.
